Mixing things up and then sorting them out

In science we have continued to investigate properties of materials- particularly reversible changes.

We had paper clips in rice, raisins in flour, sand in water and salt in water, We used sieves, filter papers and funnels, a magnet and evaporation to reverse the mixed materials- see how we got on.

Organising events in time

We have been working in groups to organise significant events on a timeline and seeing where the Shang Dynasty fitted in the chronology

Computing: Coding using Scratch

In Computing, we have been using Scratch to programme sprites to touch and react to being touched by using different programming blocks. We chose a suitable background with goodie and baddie sprites that moved and when they touched some would speak, bounce back or jump.

Maths:Roman numerals

In Maths, we have been learning Roman numerals to 1000. We used lolly sticks to make different numbers.

Science: Soluble and Insoluble

In Science, we have been sorting different materials. Recently we have looked at materials that will dissolve and those that would not.  We tested different materials such as, gravy granules, sand, salt, sugar, tea leaves, powder paint. We worked scientifically by using the same amount of water and materials.

RE: Religious Books

Our Start To A New Academic Year 2021-22

Year 5 started the academic year with our learning centered around the book Felix after the rain.

Felix hides all of his sorrow inside a large black suitcase that he carries with him wherever he goes. One day, a small boy opens the suitcase whilst Felix is sleeping. Felix wakes and the tears that he had been carrying for so long suddenly pour from him. Felix is uplifted, free and his heart is full of joy. Felix embraces the world, and the world embraces him.

We made some 3d suitcases using nets and put in Felix's and our own worries.

In maths we have been looking at numbers up to 10000 and have been rounding numbers to the nearest 10 or 100

Computing: Vector drawing

Year 5 have started to create vector drawings. They have learnt how to use different drawing tools to help them create images. We now recogn...
